Epidemic

From the author

I am an 80-year-old disabled/handicapped American author; I have written 20 self-help books. I am now addressing a subject of urgent public concern—an epidemic affecting millions of older people, an epidemic that remains largely hidden and underreported. The epidemic? Elder abuse.

Today, more than 60 million Americans are age 65 and older. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2050 the global elderly population is expected to exceed 320 million people. Elder abuse is a growing crisis that can affect anyone, regardless of income, education, or social status. I have published my own experience of elder abuse in my journal, the Elderly Diary. It contains over 100 pages and 50 selfies documenting the elder abuse I suffered.

In this firsthand true account, I describe my devastating personal experience in a transitional care facility, and the severe consequences it had on my life. The elder abuse I endured included bedsores, bruises, malnutrition, and neglect. I almost died. The facility was owned by a multi-billion-dollar publicly traded company.

My goal is to raise awareness of a widespread problem that too often goes unnoticed and unreported. Elder abuse is a terrible thing, an epidemic that will likely get worse, unless it is reduced/stopped.
